SPAX Deck Screws and the Pilot Hole Question

Do deck screws always need pilot holes? That is a question contractors ask all the time. As a general rule, pilot holes are recommended when attaching deck boards to framing. But we have taken a different approach through the design of our engineered fasteners. In short, SPAX multi-material exterior construction deck screws can be driven without pilot holes.

An explanation of why our deck screws don't require pre-drilling will be offered later in this post. First, however, it's important to discuss why contractors drill pilot holes with other types of deck screws. There are valid reasons for doing so. Those reasons don't apply when you're using SPAX deck screws thanks to the way we have designed our fasteners.

Connections Are Under Pressure

To the untrained eye, decks look like little more than groups of wood slats laying on top of a rigid wooden frame. But as any contractor knows, connections between deck boards and framing are under a tremendous amount of pressure. As deck boards dry, they naturally want to pull up from the framing underneath. Deck boards are also influenced by seasonal conditions including temperature changes and moisture.

The idea behind drilling pilot holes is to reduce some of that stress so as to prevent splitting and cracking. A pilot hole allows the deck screw to sit firmly in place while still preventing damage to the wood. Likewise, a pilot hole provides a bit of flexibility, allowing some board movement without splitting.

The ability of pilot holes to prevent cracking and splitting is not limited to the construction phase or the weeks following, during which deck boards dry out. Years down the road, as deck boards expand and contract with the seasons, properly drilled pilot holes continue to minimize stress at each connection point.

Screws Should Be Flush

Another reason for drilling pilot holes is to ensure screws are flush with the deck boards. This is done for both aesthetic and safety reasons. From a safety perspective, the last thing you want are screw heads sticking up from the boards. They are a danger to one's feet, particularly when a person is walking on a deck without shoes.

Aesthetically, screws that are not flush just look bad. One or two screws not driven deep enough can ruin the appearance of the whole deck. Drilling pilot holes makes it easier to guarantee every deck screw is flush when driven.

Why Pilot Holes Aren't Necessary With SPAX Fasteners

As previously explained, SPAX multi-material exterior construction fasteners can be driven without pilot holes. They are designed with a proprietary 4CUT™ point that prevents splitting and cracking while the screws are being driven. You get the same firm hold and secure connection without pre-drilling.

In addition, our patented multi-head allows for countersinking with ease. You get a flush screw with every drive. Our patented serrations mean quicker and easier fastening without compromising strength.

Another consideration is the double thread design of our T-Star Plus Trim Head Powerdeck screws. The bottom thread holds securely to the framing underneath while the upper thread secures the deck board. In between, a smooth, no-thread shank allows for movement to reduce the risk of splitting.

Faster and More Efficient Production

The benefits of not having to drill pilot holes should be obvious. Pre-drilling is an extra step that takes time. Furthermore, rushing through pre-drilling in order to save time can lead to poor quality through pilot holes that aren't quite right. We eliminate that step for faster and more efficient production.

Not having to drill pilot holes means laying every deck board faster. It means less drain on your batteries. You get more work done in less time yet still walk away with a finished product that is solid, secure, and aesthetically pleasing.

While drilling pilot holes is standard fare for most other deck screws on the market, they are a thing of the past for SPAX users. As a contractor, you want the finest materials worthy of the quality and craftsmanship you believe in. SPAX engineered fasteners are up to the task.
